Veneers are the ultimate treatment in instant teeth makeovers – which makes them an extremely popular choice for those looking for immediate, transformational results. But how are veneers fitted? And when will you be able to show off your new smile? Let’s take a look at the veneers process step-by-step, so you can understand a typical treatment journey.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells. When bonded to the tooth it becomes very strong

We are going to explain what happens at your first veneers consultation, and how we use the very latest in dental technology to show you your new smile before any work is even done.

Here is your overview of the typical veneers process at Sydney Road Dental Care:

Step 1: Initial consultation

The initial consultation is all about finding out exactly what you want to achieve and providing you with as much information as we can – including how veneers may look – so that you can make an informed decision about whether this treatment is right for you.

An example of one of our patients – composite veneers are directly layered onto the teeth, carefully shaped and polished. No drilling and no pain

We offer both composite resin veneers and porcelain, custom-made for the perfect result.

You might think that veneers are all the same – uniform, white and straight. But in fact, it is a very individualised process. Each veneer is precisely tailored to fit exact positions within the mouth so that your smile looks completely natural.

Ceramic veneers placed for our patient restores shape, volume and colour

At Sydney Road Dental Care, your veneers do not result in a fake, too-white ‘false teeth’ appearance. Instead, your smile is expertly enhanced and improved. Whereas it used to be very obvious that veneers had been fitted, thanks to today’s modern technology, it is often hard for even close family and friends to put their finger on exactly why you look so different and refreshed!

Your consultation involves:

Understanding your needs: At your consultation, we use our skills and considerable expertise in veneers to get a detailed insight into the smile you want to see. It is essential that we understand what you do and do not want so that your veneers treatment meets all your expectations and you have a smile that you love.

Our consultation process is about getting to know you and helping you make the right choices

Showing you what is possible: We will show you some examples of veneers treatment before and afters. These can be a great help when working out what you want, especially if you are uncertain. Bring your own inspirational photos if you can. The more information you can give us, the better!

Suitability and options: We will explain whether veneers are suitable to achieve the results that you are looking for, which type of veneer suits your needs – either composite resin or porcelain – and the different customisation options that are available.

Examination and mock-up: We do a dental examination, X-rays, scans, and a clean. We can also do a quick indication mock-up at this stage. We place a white material on your teeth to simulate what veneers could look like, without any commitment.

Veneers prices: We will explain how much veneers treatment will cost for you and provide a detailed quote, including payment plan options. Your treatment costs are transparent at Sydney Road Dental Care, so you know exactly what you are paying for at all times.

You will never be pressured to proceed with veneers treatment. It is important that you take the time to consider your options and ask us any questions you may have.

Step 2: Veneers planning and digital design

Shade selection is an important part of designing your veneers

If you would like to go ahead with veneers, the next stage in the veneers process is one of the most exciting – it is where you get to see detailed results. Your scans are fed into advanced dental software, that produces precise 3D, magnified images of your teeth and smile. The dentist and dental technician will then modify these designs so that it suits you specifically – each design is guaranteed to never be the same.

The result begins with careful planning. Every patient is different and so the designs vary greatly from one patient to the next

Using this software, we will show you digital images of how the veneers will fit, to the smallest measurements. And also, issues that the veneers will fix. You will be able to see how the veneers will correct things like misshapen teeth, small gaps, and unevenness. And best of all, the finished end result where your new smile is revealed.

This in-depth planning stage is vital to ensure the correct positioning of the veneers for your smile so that they look natural once fitted. And so that we can tweak the design, to ensure that you are completely happy.

Step 3: Preparation, moulds, and customisation

Now that you have a good indication of the natural finished result, we can start the process to create your custom veneers. Composite resin veneers will often require no preparation of your teeth. Porcelain veneers will usually require precise conservative preparation. We start by removing a very thin layer of enamel on each tooth, which creates an optimum surface for bonding your porcelain veneers.

Ceramic veneers can be 0.3 – 1mm thin. The surface is smooth but textured to replicate natural teeth

We then take digital moulds of your teeth using dental software. This is a much more precise method compared to the old-fashioned, messy way of producing dental moulds.

Once we have prepared your teeth and taken your moulds, it is time to customise your veneers to your liking. You will see one of our experienced dental technicians, to talk through your different shade and shape options.

Our dental technicians are highly skilled in achieving exactly the right texture, gradient, and translucency for a natural-looking result. Whilst your veneers are being made, we will give you temporary veneers to wear.

Step 4: Veneers try-on

When your veneers are ready, it is time to test out your veneers and try them on! This is so we can be sure that your veneers fit correctly and look exactly the way you want before they are fixed and bonded in place.

Step 5: Veneers fitting

If you are happy with your veneers, we can now fit them to your teeth. This is the final part of the veneers process and involves bonding each veneer over its corresponding tooth. It takes around two hours to fit and clean-up your new veneers. At the end of your veneers fitting, you will be ready to show off your brand-new, improved smile! We will explain the dental care for your veneers, so you know how to treat your teeth once you get home. You will be able to brush, floss, eat and drink as normal the same day.

Step 6: Veneers follow-up

We will invite you back to the clinic two to three weeks after your veneers fitting for a detailed review. This allows us to check the veneers and, importantly, to make sure that you are happy with your new smile!
